Baringo Senator Hon. William Kipkorir Cheptumo has passed away at the age of 57 after a long illness. The seasoned legislator, who also served as the Senate Security Committee Chair and was a long-serving Baringo North MP, breathed his last at Nairobi Hospital this morning while undergoing treatment.

His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from national leaders, who have hailed him as a dedicated public servant, a champion of devolution, and a man of integrity.

    Senate Speaker Amason Kingi’s Tribute

Senate Speaker Hon. Amason Kingi mourned Cheptumo as a leader who passionately defended the interests of Baringo residents and all Kenyans.

*”With profound shock and grief, I have learnt of the untimely demise of Hon. William Kipkorir Cheptumo. He was a dedicated leader who took up his legislative responsibilities with unmatched zeal and selflessly articulated the interests of the people of Baringo and Kenyans at large.

The Senate of Kenya has lost a leader who firmly believed in devolution and used every opportunity to advance its cause and the welfare of Kenyans.

I join his family, the people of Baringo County, and Kenyans in mourning a great leader and pray that God grants us all grace and fortitude to bear this monumental loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”*

    Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s Tribute

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki described Cheptumo as a dignified leader who was cautious with his words and embodied professionalism in public service.

*”The Honourable William Cheptumo, the distinguished Senator for Baringo County, will be remembered as a dignified leader who chose his words carefully in public and private conversations.

Amiable, professional, and calm, Senator Cheptumo brought out the best attributes expected of a cultured lawyer and public officer.

He worked hard all the time he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North and later as a Senator. He gave quality representation to his constituents.

I mourn with his family, friends, the people of Baringo County, and the Senate on the passing of a friend, colleague, and a great son of Kenya.”*

    President William Ruto’s Tribute

President William Ruto eulogized Cheptumo as a progressive leader who devoted his life to public service and development.

*”Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service.

He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo.

The Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa.”*

    A Legacy of Service

Senator Cheptumo’s political career spanned decades, first as the MP for Baringo North before being elected Senator in 2022. He was known for his strong stance on security matters, devolution, and community development.

The country mourns the loss of a leader who stood firm for the interests of his people. Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.

May his soul rest in peace.
