A bodyguard attached to Moiben MP Phylis Bartoo has been arrested after misplacing his firearm at a popular club in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
The officer, a police corporal, reported that he was at Timber XO Club in Sukunanga area on the night of Saturday, September 6, when he realized his Beretta pistol, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, was missing.
He told police he could not recall how or where the gun was lost. A search was immediately conducted at the club, but the firearm could not be traced. Police later visited the premises and carried out further checks without success, leading to the officer’s detention for further processing.
Authorities fear the missing weapon may be used in criminal activities. This incident adds to a growing trend of police officers losing their firearms. Just last week, another officer in Meru County was arrested after misplacing his rifle. He was later arraigned in court and ordered detained pending investigations.
Police say teams are still pursuing leads in the Eldoret case as efforts to recover the weapon continue.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Embu Town on Sunday at dawn, a businessman was shot and injured during a robbery. According to police, the victim was on his way home from his business premises when armed assailants confronted him.
The attackers, who were in a vehicle, shot him in the left thigh and robbed him of a laptop containing Ksh 50,000 from his businesses before fleeing to an unknown destination.
The businessman was rushed to hospital and admitted in stable condition. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects behind the shooting.
