Homicide detectives have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Edgar Mokua, a lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), whose body was discovered days after he mysteriously disappeared from his home in Nairobi’s Lavington estate.
According to investigators, Mokua was last seen on July 6, 2026, when he left his residence at Princes Park, Lavington, at around 4:20 p.m. He never returned home, prompting concerned family members to report him missing at Muthangari Police Station after unsuccessful attempts to trace him.
Five days later, his body was found at the Nairobi City Mortuary, where it had been taken by officers from Kiamumbi Police Station after being recovered near Woodcreek Academy.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the case was immediately taken over by homicide detectives due to its complexity.
Investigations revealed that on the night he disappeared, Mokua spent several hours at Kettle Club in Lavington in the company of two men and a woman before the group moved to Ibiza Club at Lavington Mall. Detectives established that his companions later left the venue, leaving him behind. He was never seen alive again.
His body was later found dumped near Woodcreek Academy.
A breakthrough came after forensic investigations linked a grey Toyota Ractis, registration number KBZ 002R, to the disposal of Mokua’s body. Detectives established that the vehicle allegedly dropped the body at the scene before speeding away.
Acting on forensic leads, investigators launched a manhunt that culminated in the arrest of Richard Gikuhe Mbugua at Blue Estate in Ruiru. Detectives also recovered the suspected vehicle at Murera Farm in Juja.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives complete investigations ahead of his arraignment in court. The Toyota Ractis has been impounded and is being held as an exhibit.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s murder and whether other suspects were involved.
