President William Ruto has intensified efforts to foster political unity in the Ukambani region, urging leaders to put aside their differences and work together to accelerate the implementation of key development projects in Kitui County and Machakos County.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday after hosting a high-level meeting with leaders from the two counties at , where they reviewed the progress of priority government projects and discussed strategies to speed up their implementation.

According to President Ruto, the meeting focused on unlocking the region’s economic potential through increased investment in water infrastructure, expansion of agricultural production, affordable housing programmes and the construction of modern markets to stimulate trade and create employment opportunities.

“Our discussions focused on accelerating key investments in water infrastructure, unlocking vast agricultural potential, expanding the development of housing and modern markets, and ensuring that projects are delivered on time,” the President said.

He stressed that timely completion of the projects would improve livelihoods, enhance food security, strengthen local economies and open up new opportunities for thousands of residents across the Lower Eastern region.

In what is likely to shape the region’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election, President Ruto said leaders had agreed to rise above political divisions and rally behind a shared development agenda focused on service delivery rather than partisan interests.

“We agreed on uniting leaders across the political divide behind a shared development agenda that creates jobs, expands opportunity, and improves the lives of all Kenyans,” he said.

The meeting signals the government’s renewed focus on accelerating development in the Ukambani region, where investments in water, agriculture, housing and market infrastructure are expected to play a key role in driving economic growth and improving living standards.

Political observers are also expected to closely watch the emerging cooperation between leaders from the region and the national government, with the unity message potentially reshaping political alliances as the country edges closer to the next election cycle.
