One person has been confirmed dead while several others were injured following a road traffic accident at Kinyambu along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway on Friday.

The crash involved a 14-seater matatu and two trailers.

According to preliminary police reports, the matatu was travelling from Mombasa towards Nairobi when the driver attempted to overtake a trailer. In the process, the matatu collided head-on with an oncoming trailer, resulting in a devastating crash.

The impact left the matatu extensively damaged, killing one occupant on the spot and injuring several other passengers.

Emergency responders, with the help of members of the public, rushed to the scene and rescued those trapped in the wreckage before the injured were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Police have launched investigations into the cause of the accident and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when overtaking along the busy highway.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released as authorities continue with investigations and the process of notifying the next of kin.
