This Saturday, July 12, all eyes will be on Parkside Villa in Kitui Town, where legendary Kamba Benga group Kimangu Boyz will stage a historic concert to mark 25 years since the passing of their founding leader, Charles Musyoki Kikumbi, famously known as Kijana.

The emotionally charged event, dubbed a 25th anniversary bash, is expected to draw hundreds of fans, friends, and cultural stakeholders from across the Ukambani region. Kijana, who was widely regarded as one of the greatest Benga voices of his generation, died tragically in a road accident on July 10, 2000, near Katheka Kai in Machakos, while returning from Machinery. He was just 28.

Two and a half decades later, his musical legacy lives on—not only through the original Kimangu Boyz lineup of John Muasa, Sammy Kasee, Isaiah, and Munyao—but also through his sons, Kituu and Katuu, who now headline the Kimangu Juniors.
The commemorative concert will be hosted by Marieta Musyoki, Kijana’s widow, in a powerful act of remembrance. She will be joined on stage by DJ Noma Noma, the charismatic Athiani FM presenter known for his Benga music show that champions Kamba artists.

The show kicks off at 6 PM and runs till late, with tickets going for Ksh 300. Attendees can expect a blend of classic Kimangu hits, fresh Benga sounds from the juniors, and electrifying sets from special guests including Mananja Martin, Karanga Lazima, and Maluini.
“This show is more than music—it’s memory, it’s family, and it’s culture,” DJ Noma Noma told Channel 15 News. “The return of Kimangu Boyz to Kitui is symbolic. It’s a full-circle moment that honors where it all began.”
With heightened security, ample parking, and a festive lineup that includes nyama choma and drinks, the event is expected to be one of the most significant musical gatherings in recent Ukambani history.
The 25-year anniversary bash will not only celebrate a fallen legend—it will reinforce the enduring heartbeat of Kamba Benga music, passed from father to sons, and echoed through generations.
