Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse is in the spotlight once again, this time for his misleading claims about the construction of the Makindu Town Modern Market and a disgraceful display of arrogance that could endanger the long-awaited Emali-Ukia Road project. In both instances, Mutuse’s personal pride and political maneuvering seem to be undermining real development efforts for his constituents.
Makindu Town Modern Market: Mutuse’s False Claims of Lobbying Success
Mutuse has been proudly claiming that the Makindu Town Modern Market, which is currently under construction, is a result of his lobbying efforts with the national government. However, these claims are simply misinformation. The market project is actually part of the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP), a national initiative designed to boost local economies. The national government, in collaboration with county governments, is funding the construction of these modern markets, with a budget of Ksh 50 million each.

Mutuse’s attempt to claim credit for this government-funded initiative raises serious concerns about his credibility. His political grandstanding only serves to mislead the public into thinking that he is behind this important development, when in reality, it is a national effort aimed at improving the livelihoods of traders in the region.
Arrogance Over Emali-Ukia Road Tarmacking: A History of Ego-Driven Politics
This is not the first time Mutuse’s arrogance has caused trouble. Yesterday, he displayed a similar sense of pride and insecurity when he publicly demeaned PS Terry Mbaika, who had pledged to ensure the tarmacking of the Emali-Ukia Road. In a WhatsApp group, Mutuse rudely told Mbaika to “stick to devolution” after she expressed her commitment to the road project.

This juvenile insecurity is eerily reminiscent of the 1968 clash between Kangundo MP Paul Ngei and Kilungu MP William Mbolu, where Ngei, unable to tolerate any attempt to bypass his authority, sabotaged development efforts in the region. Just like Ngei, Mutuse has begun to view himself as the “boss” of Kibwezi West, seemingly willing to undermine development projects just to maintain a sense of control.

Mutuse’s behavior has raised concerns among his colleagues. Mwala MP Hon. Vincent Kawaya even warned Mutuse, saying that “he has grown horns” and should be careful not to damage crucial projects for personal gain. His ego-driven politics could put the Emali-Ukia Road project—and other important developments—at risk if he continues on this path of disrespecting other leaders with legitimate stakes in the constituency’s progress.
A Leader More Focused on Ego Than Development
Mutuse’s actions in both the Makindu Town Modern Market and Emali-Ukia Road projects reveal a troubling trend: a leader more focused on self-promotion and ego-driven politics than on the development of his constituency. His recent clashes with leaders like PS Terry Mbaika over the road project suggest that he is willing to put his personal pride before the needs of the people he is meant to serve.

Residents of Kibwezi West have already voiced their concerns about his ability to deliver tangible development, especially after accusations last year that he was neglecting his constituents in favor of national politics. His involvement in the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—and his subsequent claims of receiving “goodies” from President William Ruto—only added fuel to the fire, leaving many questioning his true motivations.
Will Kibwezi West Voters Stand for Progress or Arrogance?
As the 2027 elections approach, the big question is whether Kibwezi West voters will continue to support a leader who places personal pride above public service. The time is now for them to decide whether they want a leader who works collaboratively for the good of the constituency or one who will continue to be a hindrance to progress.
Mutuse’s recent actions serve as a warning: his political ego may stand in the way of important developments for the people of Kibwezi West. If he continues with his current approach, the Makindu Town Modern Market could become just another project he falsely claims credit for, while the Emali-Ukia Road could join the long list of unfulfilled promises that have plagued his leadership.
Only time will tell if Mutuse will change course or continue to let his pride get in the way of his constituents’ needs.
