A political storm is quietly brewing inside the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya after party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was allegedly compelled to soften his hardline stance on competitive nominations for the 2027
General Election.
According to reliable sources within the party who spoke exclusively to Channel 15 News, Kalonzo’s February 14 declaration in Mwingi North — that all aspirants would face competitive nominations — triggered panic among a section of sitting governors allied to him.

The announcement was made during a high-profile function at Kyuso Girls High School, where leaders had gathered to celebrate the life and contribution of Mama Pauline and mark the symbolic renaming of the institution in her honor.
The Declaration That Sparked Tension
In what was seen as a bold show of internal democracy, Kalonzo declared that no aspirant would receive a direct ticket in 2027 — a statement insiders now say unsettled powerful figures who have long supported his political machinery.
A senior Wiper insider revealed that several governors seeking second terms under the party banner interpreted the remarks as a direct threat to their re-election bids.
“They felt exposed. Many have invested heavily in party activities with the understanding that loyalty would be reciprocated,” the source disclosed.
Governors Under Pressure
Among those reportedly rattled is Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos County, who is said to be facing internal political headwinds, including reported tensions with her deputy Francis Mwangangi.
At the same time, Patrick Makau is allegedly positioning himself as a serious contender for the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2027 on a Wiper ticket — a move that could complicate the governor’s re-election path.

In neighboring Makueni County, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr is also said to be under mounting political pressure, with former Kibwezi MP Philip Kaloki reportedly preparing to challenge him for the party’s nomination.
Closed-Door Confrontation
Sources intimate that shortly after the Kyuso declaration, tensions escalated into a closed-door meeting between Kalonzo and a group of influential party financiers and senior officials.
The message, according to insiders, was blunt: maintain the competitive nomination stance and risk losing critical financial backing ahead of a decisive election cycle.

Faced with the prospect of funding instability and internal fractures, Kalonzo is said to have reassured the group that the party would adopt a “structured and consultative” nomination framework — language that insiders interpret as a strategic climb-down from the earlier hardline position.
Democracy vs Political Survival
The unfolding saga highlights the delicate balancing act within Wiper — between projecting internal democracy and managing the political realities of loyalty, financing, and regional power dynamics.
While publicly the party continues to preach fairness and inclusivity, behind the scenes the battle lines for 2027 appear to have already been drawn.
Whether Wiper will proceed with fully competitive primaries or quietly broker consensus deals remains to be seen.
But one thing is clear: the revolt may have been contained — for now — but the struggle for control of the Wiper ticket in 2027 has only just begun.
