The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of increased rainfall intensity across the country starting Thursday, with Lower Eastern counties among regions expected to experience afternoon and night thunderstorms.
According to the latest forecast, early parts of the week will remain relatively calm, characterized by light showers and occasional sunny intervals in areas including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta.
However, the situation is expected to shift from mid-week, with rains becoming more frequent and intense, particularly during the afternoon and night hours.
In the Lower Eastern region, the weatherman projects moderate rainfall with isolated heavy downpours, raising concerns over flash floods in low-lying areas and potential disruptions to transport and farming activities.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone zones, as thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong winds, reduced visibility, and localized flooding.
Across the country, the forecast indicates a broader pattern of widespread rainfall, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin.
While parts of North Eastern and the Coast may experience scattered showers, most regions are expected to receive near-average to above-average rainfall, in line with the ongoing long rains season.
The department is advising Kenyans to take precautionary measures, including avoiding flooded areas, planning travel carefully, and staying updated with daily weather reports.
