In a bold and unexpected move, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged former President Uhuru Kenyatta to break the ice with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that national unity demands inclusivity, even among rivals. Speaking exclusively to TV 47’s Elizabeth Mutuku on Thursday, Kalonzo issued a challenge to the former Head of State, suggesting that if Uhuru could reconcile with President William Ruto, there’s no reason why Gachagua should be off the table.
“My advice to Former President Uhuru is simple—if he can meet Ruto, there is no harm in meeting Gachagua,” Kalonzo declared. “As one of the fathers of the nation, he cannot afford to shut his eyes to the realities of our political climate. He must stay above it all.”
Kalonzo’s remarks come at a critical time when the country is embroiled in a bitter standoff over the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Kalonzo himself is at the center of controversy, accused of sabotaging the process by backing his preferred candidate, Dr. Koki Muli, who recently lost to Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli in the fiercely contested Minority IEBC Selection Panel cluster elections.
In a fiery rebuttal, Kalonzo doubled down on his position, blaming the state for the delays and accusing it of planting Dr. Augustus Muli in the panel to derail the process.
“The state is playing games with the IEBC reconstitution. Dr. Augustus Muli is their project—a state-sponsored candidate meant to frustrate the process and buy time,” Kalonzo charged.
The explosive comments have triggered mixed reactions, especially given the frosty relationship between Uhuru and Gachagua. While Uhuru reconciled with Ruto earlier this year after a long-standing feud, his silence on Gachagua has fueled speculation of lingering bad blood.
Kalonzo’s latest salvo adds yet another layer of intrigue to the political drama unfolding in Kenya. Critics have questioned whether his call for unity is genuine or a strategic move to bolster his image ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
As the IEBC stalemate deepens and political tensions simmer, all eyes are now on Uhuru. Will he heed Kalonzo’s sensational call to meet Gachagua? And if so, could this unlikely meeting shift the political landscape?
For now, the nation waits, with the IEBC crisis and leadership reconciliation hanging precariously in the balance.
