In a momentous decision that has sent waves across Kenya’s Catholic community, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Jackson Murugara, IMC, as the Coadjutor Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Meru. This marks a significant milestone for the faithful in Meru and beyond as they prepare to welcome a seasoned servant of the Church into episcopal leadership.

The announcement, officially published in L’Osservatore Romano on January 16, 2025, was made public at 12:00 PM Rome time (2:00 PM Kenyan time). The Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, His Excellency Archbishop Bert Van Megen, promptly relayed the Vatican’s proclamation to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), solidifying Fr. Murugara’s elevation to a pivotal role in the Diocese of Meru.

    Who is Bishop-Elect Jackson Murugara?

Born in 1970 in Kamanyaki, Tharaka Nithi County, Fr. Murugara’s story is one of devotion, humility, and unwavering faith. The fifth-born in a family of ten, he embarked on his religious journey at Muthitwa Primary School, followed by Mitiri Boys’ School and St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Nkubu, Meru. His thirst for knowledge and spirituality led him to the Consolata Philosophicum and the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, where he earned his degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies.

His spiritual commitment deepened when he undertook his novitiate at Sagana (1996-1997), culminating in his first religious vows in 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he studied Theology at the Missionary Institute of London, an institution affiliated with Middlesex University. His final religious profession on November 18, 2000, and subsequent ordination to the diaconate the next day, paved the way for his priestly ordination on August 15, 2001, at Matiri Parish, Diocese of Meru.

A Journey of Dedication and Service

Fr. Murugara’s pastoral mission has been nothing short of extraordinary. He served in multiple parishes, including:

    Kagaene Parish (2001-2002)

    Mujwa Parish (2002)

Chiga Parish in Kisumu Archdiocese (2002-2003)

In 2003, he took on a crucial role as a formator for postulants at the Consolata Seminary, nurturing young seminarians for six years. His academic pursuits saw him earn a Licentiate in Spirituality from Teresianum University in Rome (2009-2011), graduating with first-class honors.

Between 2011 and 2018, he dedicated himself to Christian formation, retreats, and charity work at Bethany House in Sagana, where he managed a Charity Home for Aged Women. His most recent posting has been at the renowned Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, where his pastoral leadership and spiritual guidance have left an indelible mark.

A Defining Moment for Meru Diocese

Fr. Murugara’s appointment as Coadjutor Bishop is a testament to his unwavering faith, resilience, and devotion to the Church. As he prepares to take on his new role, the Catholic faithful in Meru Diocese and across Kenya anticipate a new era of spiritual growth, leadership, and community transformation under his guidance.

With this appointment, Pope Francis has reaffirmed the Vatican’s commitment to strong and dynamic leadership within the Kenyan Catholic Church. The Diocese of Meru stands on the brink of a new spiritual dawn, ready to embrace Bishop-Elect Jackson Murugara’s vision and stewardship.

    What’s Next?

All eyes are now on the Diocese of Meru, as it prepares for the official ordination and installation of its Coadjutor Bishop. The faithful, clergy, and leaders across the nation will soon gather in Meru for what promises to be a historic and spiritually uplifting ceremony.
