The final journey of Rev. Fr. Frederick Nguthu, whose sudden passing on January 20, 2025, left the Catholic Diocese of Kitui in deep sorrow, has been set in motion. The beloved priest will be laid to rest on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Mutune Cemetery, following a grand burial Mass at St. Patrick’s Mutune Parish grounds, presided over by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela.

As the Diocese prepares for his final farewell, an elaborate program of requiem and vigil Masses has been lined up to honor his life and legacy.

    Requiem Mass – January 29

The body of Fr. Nguthu will be moved from Tribute Funeral Home, Syongila, at 2:00 PM, followed by a solemn procession to Our Lady of Africa Cathedral, Kitui. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 PM, after which an all-night vigil will commence.

    Vigil Mass Schedule

The vigil, a sacred tradition in the Catholic faith, will be conducted in three phases:

8:00 PM – Yatta and Southern Deanery (Main Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Francis Mutua)

11:00 PM – Western and Northern Deanery (Main Celebrant: Rev. Fr. George Marete)

5:00 AM, January 30 – Central and Eastern Deanery (Main Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Patrick Musili)

A Legacy of Faith and Service

Fr. Nguthu’s passing has left an unfillable void in the Diocese, with parishioners and fellow clergy hailing him as a selfless shepherd, a pillar of faith, and a mentor to many. His burial on January 30 is expected to draw thousands of mourners, including religious leaders, government officials, and faithful from across the country.

The Catholic community continues to pray for his soul, remembering his unwavering dedication to the priesthood.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in eternal peace. Amen.”
