The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Cabinet minister and businessman Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DCI said the crash occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area, involving Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration KCZ 305U, and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration KCU 576A, belonging to Climax Company Ltd.

Preliminary findings indicate that the collision happened at approximately 2:19 a.m. and involved a head-on impact, forcing Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of collision, while the PSV bus came to a stop roughly 50 metres away.

Investigators revealed that moments before the crash, Jirongo had driven into Eagol Petrol Station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. CCTV footage recovered from the station shows that at 2:19:19 a.m., he exited the station and made a right turn back towards Nairobi. Seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the PSV bus rammed into his vehicle.

Following the incident, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to document the scene, conduct preliminary examinations, and secure exhibits. The CCTV footage has since been subjected to initial review and analysis.

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated and recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He was released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report back to the traffic base on December 22, 2025. Detectives have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom provided their accounts of the events.

The DCI further disclosed that investigations are ongoing, with forensic teams expected to revisit the scene. Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night, notably during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Additional statements will be taken from passengers who were aboard the PSV bus and other witnesses as analysis of the CCTV footage continues. Upon completion, a comprehensive investigation file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further direction.

The DCI conveyed its condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of Hon. Jirongo and assured the public of its commitment to conducting thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in line with the Constitution and the rule of law.
