Tangaza University Vice-Chancellor joins 30-member international body tasked with examining major theological questions facing the Catholic Church and the world.

Kenyan Catholic theologian Rev. Prof. Patrick Mwania has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV to the International Theological Commission, placing the Tangaza University Vice-Chancellor among scholars tasked with examining major questions of faith and doctrine affecting the Catholic Church and the wider world.

The appointment was announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, as the Holy See unveiled the membership of the Commission for its 2026–2031 term.

Fr. Mwania, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (C.S.Sp.), currently serves as Vice-Chancellor and Rector of Tangaza University in Nairobi, where he leads an institution recognised for its work in theological education and the formation of religious and lay leaders.

His appointment marks a significant recognition of his academic and ecclesiastical service, while bringing Kenyan theological scholarship into an international forum that advises the Holy See on questions of major doctrinal importance.

Role of the International Theological Commission

The International Theological Commission assists the Holy See, particularly the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, in examining theological and doctrinal questions considered important and relevant to the Church and contemporary society.

Established by Pope Paul VI in 1969, the Commission brings together theologians from different countries, academic traditions and schools of thought to contribute to the Church’s reflection on complex issues of faith.

Its work involves studying questions that require deeper theological examination, with the findings presented to the Pope and made available to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to support its work.

Members are appointed by the Pope for five-year terms, following a proposal from the Dicastery’s leadership and consultation with episcopal conferences.

The new membership will serve during the 2026–2031 term, with the Commission comprising 30 members, including 24 newly appointed members and six whose mandates have been renewed.

    New international responsibilities

Fr. Mwania joins theologians drawn from different parts of the world, reflecting the international character of the Commission and the range of academic perspectives brought into its work.

The membership includes scholars and clergy from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and other regions, with the Commission expected to continue examining questions of contemporary theological relevance during its new term.

Monsignor Piero Coda has also been confirmed to continue serving as the Commission’s Secretary General for another five-year term.

The appointments come at a time when religious institutions continue to engage with questions arising from social change, scientific advancement, technology and the relationship between Christian teaching and contemporary life.

For Tangaza University, Fr. Mwania’s appointment is a milestone that extends beyond the institution, highlighting the contribution of Kenyan-based theological scholarship to the Catholic Church’s international intellectual and doctrinal work.

The university has congratulated its Vice-Chancellor, describing the appointment as recognition of his contribution to theological scholarship and service to the Church.

It also wished him wisdom and grace as he takes up the new responsibility.

Fr. Mwania’s appointment places him among the theologians who will contribute to the Commission’s work over the next five years, as it assists the Holy See in addressing questions central to Catholic teaching and the Church’s engagement with the modern world.
