A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large crucifix fell on him during a livestreamed Mass, moments after he delivered a sermon urging worshippers to spend less time on their phones and more time with God and their families.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after the heavy structure fell on him at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The incident occurred during a religious service that was being broadcast live online, capturing the moment the crucifix detached from the wall behind the altar and struck the priest as he faced the congregation.
Priest’s Final Message on Life
Before the accident, Father Sánchez Molinari had been reflecting on the brevity of life and the importance of using time meaningfully.
“One day, all of us who are here will also die, and sometimes the time we have used on things does not have as much meaning as the time we use in God,” he told the congregation.
He had urged worshippers to reconsider how much time they spent on their mobile phones, encouraging them to devote more attention to their faith and their families.
Minutes later, the crucifix mounted behind the altar suddenly fell, striking him on the head.
The unexpected incident triggered panic inside the church, with distressed worshippers heard calling for help as people rushed towards the priest.
Emergency assistance was sought, but Sánchez Molinari died following the incident, according to media reports.
The circumstances surrounding the accident have drawn widespread attention because the priest had been speaking about mortality shortly before the fatal incident.
However, there has been no established evidence suggesting any connection between his sermon and the accident.
Church Confirms Priest’s Death
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Sánchez Molinari’s death in a statement issued on October 17.
The priest served as parish priest at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which falls under the archdiocese’s Central Vicariate.
He was also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious congregation engaged in missionary and pastoral work.
In its announcement, the archdiocese expressed condolences and solidarity with the Redemptorist community, the priest’s relatives and friends, while calling for prayers for the repose of his soul.
The fatal incident has drawn attention to the dangers posed by heavy structures mounted above areas where religious services are conducted.
As of the latest available reports, authorities had not publicly established why the crucifix detached from its mounting. No confirmed findings on the cause of the accident had been released.
The tragedy has left worshippers and members of the Catholic community mourning a priest whose final recorded message centred on faith, the value of time and the inevitability of death.
