Pope Leo XIV has been admitted to Romeโs Agostino Gemelli University Hospital for surgery to remove a small, localized nodule from his lung, with the Vatican expected to provide an update on his condition later Tuesday evening.

The operation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and will be performed by the hospitalโs thoracic surgery team, led by Professor Stefano Margaritora, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The procedure follows the discovery of the lung nodule during recent medical examinations. The Pope previously disclosed that doctors detected the growth at an early stage and recommended surgery to remove it.

The development has drawn attention to the health of the 71-year-old pontiff, who became leader of the Catholic Church in May 2025.
The Vatican has not indicated that the nodule is cancerous, and its nature should not be assumed before medical findings are released.
An official update is expected in the evening following the operation, which will provide further information on the Popeโs condition and recovery.
