Residents of Kitui East Constituency are witnessing the transformation of a long-held dream into reality after the tarmac on the Kitui–Zombe Road reached Zombe Town, ending years of dusty travel and difficult road conditions.
The milestone marks a significant step in the ongoing upgrade of the road to bitumen standards by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), a project expected to improve connectivity, boost trade, and enhance access to essential services across the region.

For decades, Zombe residents have endured rough journeys, especially during the rainy season when sections of the road became difficult to navigate. Today, the sight of fresh tarmac stretching into the town has become a symbol of progress and renewed hope for local communities.
The development also revives memories of last year’s economic empowerment programmes in Kitui East, where leaders repeatedly pushed for the fast-tracking of key infrastructure projects, including the Kitui–Zombe Road. During several public meetings attended by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, local leaders urged the national government to prioritise the road, describing it as critical to unlocking the economic potential of the area.

Among the strongest advocates was Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai, who consistently raised the need for the road’s upgrade during public engagements and government forums. At the time, residents were assured that efforts were underway to secure funding and accelerate implementation.
Less than a year later, the arrival of tarmac in Zombe Town is being viewed by many residents as evidence that those commitments are beginning to bear fruit.
The improved road is expected to ease the movement of people and goods, lower transportation costs, and provide farmers with better access to markets. Local businesses are also anticipating increased commercial activity as accessibility improves.
As construction continues on the remaining sections, optimism is growing that the project will further stimulate economic growth in Kitui East and strengthen links between rural communities and urban centres.
For residents who have waited years to see the road upgraded, the arrival of tarmac in Zombe is more than an infrastructure milestone—it is a visible sign that development promises are gradually turning into reality.

What was once a dusty stretch of road is steadily becoming a modern transport corridor, ushering in a new chapter for Zombe Town and the wider Kitui East region.
