The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has launched a scathing attack on the Azimio la Umoja coalition, accusing it of orchestrating legal hurdles that have stalled the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). In a statement signed by Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar, UDA distanced the government from the delays, laying the blame squarely on Azimio’s doorstep.
According to UDA, the ongoing delays are due to Constitutional Petition No. 43 of 2024 filed at the Kiambu High Court, which has halted the recruitment of IEBC commissioners and the selection panel. The party clarified that the government is not a party to the case and reiterated its compliance with all requirements to ensure the IEBC’s timely reconstitution.
“We call upon the litigants in the referenced case, who are members of the Azimio coalition, to withdraw their case to enable the process to be completed,” read part of the statement. UDA also implored the Judiciary to prioritize the national need for a functioning electoral commission over individual grievances raised in the petition.
The party expressed its eagerness for the IEBC’s reconstitution, citing the need to address pending by-elections in various wards and constituencies that have remained vacant for the past two years. “We, at UDA, anxiously await the reconstitution of the IEBC as we look forward to winning the by-elections,” the statement added confidently.
The development is likely to escalate political tension between UDA and Azimio, with the judiciary now under pressure to expedite its ruling. The IEBC reconstitution process has become a contentious issue, with both sides accusing each other of political sabotage.
