The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is mourning the death of its official, Betty Rotich, who was killed in a tragic road accident along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway while returning from an official staff mental wellness workshop in Naivasha.
According to family members, Rotich lost her life on Friday, July 3, after the vehicle she was travelling in was involved in a fatal crash in the Kericho area. She had been travelling to Eldoret after attending a mental wellness workshop for IEBC staff at Sawela Lodges in Naivasha.

Rotich was the sister of former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, making her death a devastating loss to both her family and colleagues at the electoral commission.
Although police have confirmed the fatal accident, authorities are yet to release a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the accident and whether factors such as speeding, weather, road conditions or mechanical failure played a role.
Her death comes at a time when the IEBC is in the spotlight as it prepares for critical electoral activities following the recent reconstitution of the commission. Colleagues have described Rotich as a committed and diligent officer whose contribution to the commission will be greatly missed.
The tragedy has also renewed concern over the increasing number of fatal road accidents on the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors. Road safety stakeholders have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding and exercise caution, particularly on long-distance journeys.
By the time of publication, the IEBC had not issued an official statement regarding Rotich’s death. Her family is expected to communicate funeral and burial arrangements after consultations.
Rotich’s passing has attracted an outpouring of condolences from friends, colleagues and Kenyans, who have taken to social media to mourn a life cut short.
