A cloud of grief has descended on the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu Campus following the discovery of the body of Jane Atila Quedeya, a student who had been missing for nearly a week.

Detectives have arrested and detained Nicholas Mutua Mutia, 34, who is believed to be Atila’s estranged boyfriend, in connection with her brutal murder.

The decomposed body of Atila was found dumped in a thicket within Kefri Muguga Forest on October 17, 2025, four days after her family reported her missing at the Kikuyu Police Station.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), forensic fingerprint analysis conducted in collaboration with the National Registration Bureau confirmed the identity of the remains as that of Atila.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the student was last seen alive in the company of Mutua shortly before her disappearance — a link that placed him at the center of the probe.

The suspect was arraigned before the Kikuyu Law Courts on October 25, where detectives were granted 21 days to detain him as investigations continue. The case will be mentioned again on November 13, 2025.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of more suspects being involved, as the investigation widens to uncover what led to Atila’s tragic death.
