A 32-year-old secondary school teacher has died in a suspected murder in Mutito North, Kitui County, with her husband arrested after police alleged he fatally attacked her before attempting to disguise the killing as a road accident.

The deceased, Hellen Ngindu Matuvi, a teacher at Itiko Secondary School, was travelling as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle ridden by her husband, Mutua Munyasia, 33, when the incident occurred at Nguni Drift.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the couple stopped along the road before they both alighted from the motorcycle. Detectives allege that the suspect then attacked his wife with a sharp object, inflicting a fatal stab wound near her left ear.

Investigators believe the suspect later pushed the motorcycle into the drift in an attempt to make the incident appear as though the couple had been involved in a self-inflicted road accident.

Good Samaritans rushed Ms Matuvi to Mutito Mission Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival after suffering severe blood loss. The suspect also sought treatment at the hospital, claiming he had been injured in the alleged accident.

Police officers who visited the hospital arrested Mr Munyasia after establishing inconsistencies in his account of the incident. He remains in police custody as homicide detectives continue with investigations and is expected to be arraigned in court once inquiries are complete.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Mutito North and the wider Kitui County, with colleagues, students and residents mourning the death of a teacher described as dedicated and committed to her profession.

The killing adds to growing concern over the rising number of intimate partner killings and gender-based violence cases reported across the country, with authorities urging victims and members of the public to report threats and domestic violence incidents before they escalate into tragedy.
