Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has gazetted a special sitting for Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to hear charges against Kericho Governor Dr. Eric Mutai following his impeachment by the County Assembly last week.
In a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on Monday, August 18, Kingi announced that the sitting will be held at the Senate Chamber, Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, starting at 2:30 p.m. The agenda will include the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as a Nominated Senator under Article 98(1)(b) of the Constitution, the hearing of charges against Governor Mutai, and alteration of the Senate calendar.

Governor Mutai was impeached on Friday, August 15, after 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favor of a motion introduced by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accusing him of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.
The Senate will now determine whether Mutai remains in office or is permanently removed — a decision expected to shape the political direction of Kericho County.
