KNEC Releases Results for Kalonzo-Linked School in Kitui, Defying Cheating Allegations

In a dramatic turn of events, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has cleared the air by releasing the results for all 92 candidates at Mama Malia Academy in Tseikuru, Kitui County, after initially withholding them due to allegations of cheating. The highly anticipated results were unveiled, showcasing a remarkable performance that has stunned both the public and education experts alike.

The impressive results include 1 student achieving a B+, 17 students scoring a B, 51 students with a B-, and 22 students attaining a C+. One candidate scored a C, while the entire cohort recorded an average mean grade of 7.94 (C+)—with an astonishing mean deviation of 0.00, indicating uniformity in performance across the board.

The release of the results comes after weeks of uncertainty, following KNEC’s announcement of an investigation into allegations of exam malpractice at the school. However, the results’ release seems to be a clear vindication of the institution, which has been under scrutiny despite consistently being one of the most improved schools in the country.

Mama Malia Academy, founded by Pauline Musyoka as a rescue center for underprivileged girls, has a track record of excellence, and its status as a beacon of hope for disadvantaged students has only been solidified by this latest outcome. The majority of the students, who are sponsored by the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation, come from impoverished backgrounds across several counties, and the foundation’s support has enabled them to excel academically.

    Stellar Achievements Amidst Controversy

The 2023 results follow a streak of academic successes, with the school consistently ranking among the most improved nationally since 2018. The academy made headlines earlier when one of its students, Esther Mwikali, who started with only 199 marks in KCPE, scored a B plain in KCSE, earning her recognition as the most improved student nationally.

Despite the cloud of suspicion that initially loomed over the institution, the outcome is a testament to the school’s commitment to excellence. It also raises questions about the validity of the previous cheating allegations, which have now been overshadowed by this remarkable achievement.

Elsewhere, the education sector has been rocked by a similar scandal at Matinyani Boys Secondary School, where KNEC flagged several candidates for exam irregularities, leading to the cancellation of their results. However, Mama Malia Academy’s results have set a new benchmark, proving that the institution has maintained integrity and focus, despite the storm of allegations.

    Political and Educational Implications

The controversy surrounding Mama Malia Academy’s results has sparked fierce debate, with politicians and educationists weighing in on the matter. Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, who had previously demanded clarity from KNEC, lauded the academy’s success, stating that it was proof that the institution had been unfairly targeted by the cheating allegations.

“As a former teacher and high school principal, I commend Mama Malia Academy for its outstanding performance. This result demonstrates that hard work, dedication, and proper guidance can overcome baseless accusations. It is a clear message that we must continue to support and uplift our schools, especially those with a mission to provide education for the underprivileged,” said Nyenze.

With the results now released, Mama Malia Academy’s future looks brighter than ever. The school’s reputation remains intact, and its status as a model of academic improvement in Kenya has been further cemented by this extraordinary outcome.
