Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu has officially announced her candidacy for the 2027 Kitui governorship, entering an already competitive field with other prominent political figures. Her bid adds weight to the lineup of strong contenders, especially within the Wiper Democratic Movement.
Fellow Wiper members like Kitui Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua and Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu are also eyeing the seat, with Kiio and Kasalu regarded as close allies of Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a factor that may influence party dynamics.
Governor Julius Malombe, expected to defend his seat, has already criticized Kiio’s “Oversight Mashinani” initiative, suggesting it’s more campaign than oversight. Dr. Mulu’s influence in Kitui Central also bolsters his profile, making him a formidable candidate.
Former Governor Charity Ngilu, though yet to declare her intentions, is another strong potential candidate, known for her past achievements and strong grassroots support. Former Senator David Musila may also enter the race or support a candidate, adding more depth to the contest.
With Kasalu, Kiio, Mulu, and potentially Ngilu and Musila, Kitui’s 2027 gubernatorial race is shaping up to be a high-stakes election, offering voters a broad selection of experienced leaders and a spirited contest for the county’s future direction.
