Kitui County is celebrating a rising athletics star after Purity Munyalo, a Grade 10 student at Our Lady of Mercy Mutomo Girls, delivered an outstanding performance at the National Secondary School Games held in Kisumu.
Purity clinched second place in the girls’ long jump after registering an impressive 4.87 metres, earning a silver medal in a fiercely contested event that brought together the country’s top school athletes.
Her achievement not only secured her a place on the national podium but also earned her a call-up to Team Kenya. She is now set to represent the country at the East Africa Secondary School Games scheduled for August in Tanzania.

Hailing from Kyamako in Mathima, Mutomo Sub-County, Purity’s success story is inspiring many across Kitui, highlighting the immense potential of young athletes from rural areas when given the right support and platform.
Her coach, Mr. Joseph Wambua, has been praised for his dedication and role in nurturing her talent, guiding her to national recognition through consistent training and mentorship.
Education and sports stakeholders in the region have welcomed the achievement, noting that such milestones reinforce the importance of investing in school sports as a pathway to national and international opportunities.
As she prepares for the regional competition, all eyes will be on the young athlete to see if she can build on her national success and bring further glory to both Kitui County and Kenya at large.

In another impressive showing for Kitui County, Esther Makasi Mwendwa of Thitani Girls Secondary School in Mwingi West Sub-county made a remarkable debut at the national stage, finishing third in the girls’ high jump. Competing for the first time at the National Secondary School Games, Esther displayed resilience and promise to clinch a podium finish, further underlining the region’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for emerging athletics talent.
