Kitui County Assembly Shake-Up? Deputy Majority Leader Dr. Erastus Mbuno Dismisses Leadership Coup as ‘Cheap Propaganda’

A fresh political storm is raging in Kitui after reports surfaced of an imminent leadership overhaul in the County Assembly. However, in a swift and fiery response, Deputy Majority Leader and Endau Malalani MCA, Dr. Erastus Mbuno, has dismissed the claims as “pure propaganda” aimed at creating confusion within Wiper’s ranks.

The reports had suggested that Wiper MCAs were set to meet this Tuesday at the party’s command center to elect a new leadership team, with sweeping changes affecting key assembly positions. But Dr. Mbuno has now come out guns blazing, insisting that there is no such plan and branding the allegations as a desperate scheme by political detractors.

    Who’s Behind the Alleged Coup?

According to the earlier reports, the supposed shake-up would see Ikanga/Kyatune Ward Mca Hon. Cyrus Musyoka take over as Majority Leader, Kitui Township MCA Hon. Daniel Ngoima become Deputy Speaker, and Hon. Katonyi replace Kanyangi MCA Hon. Katula as Majority Whip. But Dr. Mbuno has now rubbished these claims, stating that Wiper MCAs remain united and there is no crisis in leadership.

“These are mere fabrications meant to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension in the assembly. Wiper Party remains solid, and leadership changes are not done through roadside gossip,” Dr. Mbuno fired back.

His remarks have sent shockwaves across Kitui’s political circles, fueling speculation that power struggles could be simmering beneath the surface, with factions within Wiper possibly testing the waters for a political coup.

    Is Wiper Facing Internal Turmoil?

The conflicting reports have left many wondering whether Wiper’s grip on Kitui politics is being challenged from within. While Dr. Mbuno maintains that no leadership changes are in the pipeline, sources close to the assembly leadership suggest that Tuesday’s meeting is still on—leaving room for last-minute surprises.

Political analysts argue that this saga could be an early sign of deeper divisions within Wiper, as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. With Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe working closely with the assembly, any shift in leadership could have far-reaching consequences on governance and party influence.

    A Political Showdown Looms

As the Wiper MCAs gear up for their much-anticipated meeting, tensions remain high. Will Dr. Mbuno’s strong rebuttal silence the coup rumors, or is there a secret plot unfolding behind closed doors?

One thing is certain—Kitui County politics has just entered a high-voltage phase, and the coming days will be crucial in determining who holds the real power.
