A police officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kibwezi has been arraigned in court over a violent robbery spree.

Detectives from the Serious Crimes Unit, in collaboration with DCI Ruiru, arrested Dennis Wafula Wanabisi after ballistic evidence linked him to two daring robberies that occurred in Mtito Andei on July 22, 2024.

A Night of Terror in Kibwezi

On the fateful night, a gang of four, dressed in jungle uniforms and armed with a pistol, unleashed terror at Yikisaya Trading Centre in Kibwezi Sub-County.

Their first target was 021 CLUB, where they stormed in, terrorizing bar attendants and customers at gunpoint. Witnesses say the robbers ordered everyone to surrender their valuables, and in a chilling moment, one of them shot a bar attendant in the stomach, leaving him with serious injuries. The gang then made away with Ksh 50,000 in cash.

Undeterred, the gang proceeded to Seton Night Club at Darajani Shopping Centre. They fired two shots into the air to instill fear before robbing patrons and workers of Ksh 25,850 and two mobile phones.

Officer Wanabisi’s Shocking Link to the Crime

Initial investigations led detectives to suspect that Officer Wanabisi was either involved in or had crucial information about the robberies. This suspicion was further strengthened when his firearm was confiscated for forensic analysis.

A breakthrough came when ballistic tests conducted at DCI Headquarters confirmed that the empty cartridges recovered from both crime scenes had been fired from Wanabisi’s firearm—a damning piece of evidence tying him directly to the violent heists.

    Court Appearance and Detention

With the evidence stacked against him, Officer Wanabisi was today arraigned before the Makindu Law Courts. Investigators successfully sought a 14-day custodial order to finalize their probe into his involvement.

The case has reignited public debate over rogue police officers engaging in criminal activities, further eroding trust in law enforcement. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has strongly condemned Wanabisi’s alleged actions, vowing to weed out rogue elements from the force and ensure that justice is served.

As investigations continue, residents of Kibwezi remain shaken by the thought that one of their supposed protectors may have been behind the wave of violence. The case now puts the police service under intense scrutiny as Kenyans demand accountability and justice.
