In an exclusive interview with Channel 15 News, the Chairman of the Kamba Clans Council of Elders, Mr. Bonface James Syengo, has shed light on the critical role of Kamba clans in championing community development and resolving regional issues.
“Kamba clans are very active and alive. We stand as a cultural entity that supports the community’s progress. Whenever development calls, the elders step in,” Mr. Syengo explained. Highlighting their impact, he pointed to the involvement of Kamba elders in brokering the deal for the Kitui-Kibwezi Road, which is now nearing completion despite initial setbacks.
On the IEBC Selection Panel Case
Addressing the contentious IEBC Selection Panel case, Mr. Syengo described it as a “democratic expression.” While acknowledging Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli’s determination, he urged Kalonzo Musyoka not to dictate the outcome.
“As elders, we don’t want conflicts. Let Kyalo Muli venture out and prove himself free from Kalonzo’s influence. Kalonzo should let him struggle independently. Kyalo may even be more suitable for this role, but that’s for him to show,” Syengo remarked.
He further noted that the elders are open to supporting Kalonzo in other capacities but emphasized the importance of nurturing new leaders.
Building Cultural and Regional Unity
Mr. Syengo also revealed efforts to strengthen ties with the GEMA communities, tracing shared ancestral roots back to Congo. “We are proud to see the Kamba rejoining this association. It’s about bringing unity and advising where the community needs guidance. Whoever refuses our advice is to blame for their own setbacks,” he said.
Elders’ Upcoming Meetings
The Chairman shared that the elders have a series of significant meetings lined up. A general assembly will take place on January 16 in Machakos to address clan affairs, while a constitutional review meeting was held from December 9–11 at PrideInn Hotel, bringing together the Executive Council of 15 representatives.
Reflecting on Kalonzo Musyoka’s rise
Mr. Syengo credited the late Mulu Mutisya for shaping him as a Kamba kingpin but suggested it’s time for a broader leadership strategy. “Kalonzo must embrace new realities and work with emerging leaders for the community’s benefit,” he concluded.
