The Judiciary has issued a scathing condemnation of the recent wave of abductions reported across the country, warning that such acts are a direct assault on Kenya’s democracy and the fundamental rights of its citizens.
In a strongly-worded statement, the Judiciary described the resurgence of abductions as a “menace that has no place in a nation governed by the rule of law” and called out security agencies for failing to safeguard the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.
“These abductions are not just illegal; they are a blatant violation of the very values that define our nation. They are an affront to justice and a chilling threat to the democratic fabric of Kenya,” the statement read.
The Judiciary’s remarks come just hours after the National Police Service (NPS) issued a denial of any involvement in the disappearance of a young activist, whose case has sparked outrage nationwide. Despite the denial, public pressure continues to mount, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launching investigations into the allegations.
The Judiciary called on all security organs to end such practices immediately and align their operations with the Constitution. “Kenya is not a rogue state. We are a constitutional democracy. Those behind these acts must be held accountable!”
Families of missing individuals remain in anguish, as human rights groups accuse rogue elements within security agencies of engaging in enforced disappearances. The activist’s abduction is the latest in a disturbing pattern that has seen several young people vanish without a trace, fueling fears of a systematic crackdown on dissent.
With the IPOA now involved and the Judiciary’s stern warning, the government is under immense pressure to act. Will this dark chapter of abductions and disappearances end, or is Kenya on the brink of sliding further into lawlessness?
