The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially set August 10, 2027 as the date for Kenya’s next General Election, unveiling a detailed electoral roadmap that outlines key deadlines for public officers, political parties, independent candidates and voters.
The roadmap, released during the launch of the Commission’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030 and Election Operations Plan 2025–2027, marks the formal commencement of preparations for the highly anticipated polls that will determine Kenya’s next President, Members of Parliament, Governors, Senators, Women Representatives and Members of County Assemblies.
IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu announced that public officers intending to vie for elective positions must resign from their positions by February 9, 2027, in line with constitutional and legal requirements governing participation in elections.
Political parties have been directed to submit their membership registers and nomination schedules to the Commission by March 16, 2027, setting the stage for internal party processes ahead of the polls.
The Commission further directed political parties to conclude party primaries and resolve all nomination disputes by May 9, 2027, a deadline that will also apply to individuals seeking to contest as independent candidates, who must have formally resigned from political party membership by that date.
Candidate nominations for all elective seats will be conducted between May 29 and June 11, 2027, while voter registration will officially close and the register certified on June 12, 2027.
The official campaign period will run up to August 7, 2027, three days before Kenyans head to the ballot on August 10.
Speaking during the launch, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the unveiling of the strategic and operational plans demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability and early preparedness.
“By unveiling these two strategic documents, we set in motion a deliberate, transparent and accountable journey towards the 2027 General Election. We reaffirm our constitutional mandate, our institutional resolve and our solemn duty to protect and uphold the sovereign will of the people of Kenya,” said Ethekon.
He noted that the Commission’s Strategic Plan is anchored on the theme, “Inclusion and Participation in Deepening Democracy in Kenya,” under the slogan “Your Vote, Your Voice – Kura Yako, Sauti Yako.”
According to Ethekon, the plan seeks to build an electoral management body that is credible, trusted, responsive and committed to delivering elections that are inclusive, transparent, efficient and accountable.
The IEBC identified four strategic priorities that will guide its work over the next five years: effective management of elections, citizen engagement and participation, equitable representation and strengthened institutional governance.
Ethekon said lessons drawn from previous electoral cycles, court decisions, election observation reports and stakeholder consultations had informed reforms and operational improvements contained in the new plans.
He assured Kenyans that the Commission is determined to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and protect the sanctity of every vote cast.
“When the story of the 2027 General Election is written, our desire is that Kenyans will say their Electoral Commission prepared diligently, acted impartially, rose to the occasion and faithfully discharged its constitutional mandate,” he said.
The IEBC chairperson further emphasized that the success of the 2027 elections will depend on collective efforts by political parties, candidates, state institutions, the media, civil society organizations, development partners and citizens.
With the election date now formally announced and critical milestones outlined, political parties, aspirants and voters have been put on notice as the country officially begins the countdown to the 2027 General Election.
