The political landscape in Ukambani is once again being shaken by the rise of Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, whose name is now being whispered in high political circles as a potential challenger to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Amid growing speculation, political posters purporting to announce Muli’s 2027 presidential bid have surfaced. However, the man at the center of it all has remained conspicuously silent. If anything, his current focus appears to be elsewhere—specifically, consolidating his political stronghold in Kitui Central, where he has aggressively mobilized thousands of new members into his NLP party.

With Kitui Central boasting nearly 80,000 registered voters, its political significance cannot be ignored. If NLP continues on this trajectory and registers sufficient numbers, it could tilt the balance of power in Kitui politics and force its way into any major political realignments ahead of 2027—including the gubernatorial race.
The main question now being asked is: Can Augustus Muli launch a meaningful challenge against Kalonzo in Ukambani?

The last time Kalonzo underestimated Muli, he paid dearly. During the battle for representation in the IEBC selection panel, Muli decisively outmaneuvered Kalonzo, forcing the Wiper leader to run to Raila Odinga for help. In the end, Raila had to intervene and convince Muli to step aside in favor of Kalonzo’s ally, Dr. Koki Muli.

If Muli could defeat Kalonzo within Azimio, many believe he stands an even better chance in Ukambani, where Kalonzo’s 15-year dominance has left little to show for the region’s development. A new wave of discontent is growing, particularly among Gen Z voters, who are eager for a fresh and dynamic leader.

The youth in Ukambani are increasingly frustrated with the region’s past and present leadership. Muli has emerged as a promising alternative, capturing their attention and, in some cases, their admiration. If this trend continues, could Muli be the man to finally dismantle Kalonzo’s long-standing grip on Ukambani politics?
For now, Muli remains silent on the presidential bid rumors. But in politics, silence often speaks louder than words.
