The Kenyan technology and business sectors are reeling from the shock of the sudden and tragic death of Mwaura Gathua, the long-serving Chief Executive Officer of premier ICT firm Com Twenty One Limited. In an incident that has sent a cold shiver through the corporate world, the veteran tech leader’s life came to an end in the early hours of Tuesday morning after he reportedly plunged from the 14th floor of the Alba Gardens apartments along Kasuku Road in Nairobi’s Kilimani neighborhood.

The quiet of the upscale residential area was broken when security guards at the high-rise complex reported hearing a loud thud, only to discover the CEO’s body on the ground floor. Officers from the Kilimani Police Station were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they have since launched an investigation into the suspected suicide. As detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) review CCTV footage and scour the 14th-floor unit to reconstruct Gathua’s final moments, the industry he helped shape for over two decades is left in a state of disbelief.

Mwaura Gathua was far more than a corporate executive; he was a pioneer who helped lay the digital foundation of Kenya’s “Silicon Savannah.” Since founding Com Twenty One at the turn of the millennium in 2000, he spent more than twenty years transforming the company from a modest startup into a regional Tier-1 powerhouse. Under his steady leadership, the firm became a critical partner for the nation’s infrastructure, specializing in the complex data centers, cybersecurity frameworks, and unified communications systems that power Kenya’s modern economy today.

His professional legacy is etched into the operations of the country’s most iconic brands. From Safaricom and KenGen to Kenya Power and Britam, Gathua was the visionary leader that major corporations turned to for high-level enterprise solutions. Among his peers, he was respected not just for his technical prowess, but for a “client-first” philosophy that focused on using technology to simplify business and enhance national productivity.

However, the tragic nature of his passing has cast a somber light on the silent struggles often faced by high-achieving professionals. Despite a career marked by immense success and stability, his death has sparked a necessary conversation about mental health and the invisible pressures within the corporate world.

As the body of the fallen tech titan remains at the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, his colleagues, friends, and family remain in deep mourning. For now, the ICT world remembers a man who spent twenty years connecting the region through technology, even as his own journey ended in a tragedy that has left the country searching for answers.
