Two people have died following a horrific head-on collision involving a Probox and an oncoming SUV at Ngangani area near Kisasi in Kitui Rural Constituency on Tuesday afternoon.

The victims , the Probox driver and a woman seated in the front passenger seat — died on the spot after their vehicle rammed into a Toyota Prado in a devastating impact that eyewitnesses described as “unavoidable and instant.”

According to eyewitnesses, the Toyota Probox is said to have been overspeeding and attempting to overtake when the driver miscalculated the distance, slipping into the lane of the oncoming SUV.

“The Probox was trying to overtake at high speed, but it entered the Prado’s lane unexpectedly. The impact was very strong; there was no chance for the two to survive,” said one eyewitness.

Occupants of the SUV escaped unhurt, although the vehicle caught fire moments after the crash. Members of the public managed to extinguish the flames before the fire spread further.

Police arrived shortly after and moved the bodies to Kitui Referral Hospital morgue as investigations began.

The Kitui–Kibwezi Highway, one of the busiest transport corridors in the region, has recently recorded a worrying rise in fatal accidents. Authorities and road-safety advocates continue to warn motorists against overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, and driving while fatigued.

This latest tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations along the stretch, with residents urging NTSA and traffic police to intensify patrols, erect more warning signs, and sustain road-safety awareness campaigns to prevent further loss of life.
