Wiper Party Leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has declared Dr. Koki Muli as the most suitable candidate to represent Azimio in the IEBC Selection Panel, emphasizing her impeccable qualifications and vast experience in electoral matters.
Speaking during a birthday celebration organized by the Wiper Women Democrats, Kalonzo did not hold back in his praise for Dr. Koki Muli, stating that her expertise extends beyond serving as a panelist. He positioned her as a strong contender to succeed Wafula Chebukati as the next IEBC Chairperson. “It will be impossible for anybody to steal elections again. Dr. Koki Muli is not just qualified to serve as a panelist; she is the most qualified Kenyan to lead the IEBC,” Kalonzo said.
This bold endorsement comes against the backdrop of a protracted dispute within Azimio over who should represent the coalition in the IEBC Selection Panel. In October, Wiper nominated Dr. Koki Muli as its choice for the Minority Party representative, but her nomination was met with stiff opposition from Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli of the NLP Party.
Augustus, who secured 17 votes in an earlier election, argued he was the legitimate nominee, prompting a court battle that has since stalled the IEBC reconstitution process.
In an earlier report by Channel 15 News, it was revealed that two court cases have been filed over this stalemate. Dr. Augustus Muli, a vocal critic of the nomination process, has accused Azimio of sidelining him despite his victory. On the other hand, Wiper and its allies have maintained that Dr. Koki Muli is the best choice to ensure credible representation of Azimio in the panel.
The IEBC selection stalemate has further divided the Azimio coalition, with some members accusing party leadership of favoritism. Observers warn that the unresolved dispute is delaying critical electoral reforms necessary to restore public confidence in the IEBC following the controversial 2022 elections.
With Kalonzo now throwing his weight behind Dr. Koki Muli, this latest development is likely to intensify the ongoing battle between the two Azimio candidates as the court’s verdict is eagerly awaited to resolve the deadlock.
