Deputy President Kithure Kindiki today visited Kitui town to inspect ongoing preparations for the upcoming Mashujaa (Heroes) Day celebrations, set for October 20.

Kindiki toured the Ithookwe Stadium and the Ithookwe Airstrip, the centerpiece projects for the national event, urging contractors to complete the works on time while upholding quality standards.

The 10,000-seater Ithookwe Stadium, now 80 percent complete, is the signature project and is being built to international standards at a cost of Ksh 700 million. Once completed, it is expected to not only host the Mashujaa Day celebrations but also provide a long-term facility for sports tournaments, cultural events, and other community activities for Kitui residents.

The Ithookwe Airstrip, undergoing rehabilitation at a cost of Ksh 150 million, is also nearing completion after years of neglect. The upgrade is expected to enhance accessibility to Kitui, especially during the national celebrations.

Speaking at the construction site, DP Kindiki said the government was committed to ensuring that Kitui delivered a successful Mashujaa Day celebration. “These projects are not just about one day of festivities; they are investments that will serve Kitui people and generations to come,” he noted.

Beyond the stadium and airstrip, Kitui is also benefitting from improvements in road networks, electricity connections, and water supply systems—massive investments expected to boost the county’s long-term growth and open new opportunities for residents.

With just weeks to go, anticipation is building as Kitui prepares to host Kenyans from across the country in what is expected to be a historic Mashujaa Day celebration.
