The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reportedly been compromised by unidentified cybercriminals. This breach comes on the heels of a similar attack on the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where their X account was hijacked and rebranded as ‘DeepSeek AI’ by cryptocurrency scammers.

The DCI’s X account, a critical tool for law enforcement communication and public engagement, was observed displaying unauthorized posts and suspicious activity earlier today. While official statements from the DCI are pending, cybersecurity experts are raising alarms over this brazen attack on a pivotal government institution.

Just days prior, KBC confirmed that its X account, boasting over 800,000 followers, was seized by hackers who altered the handle to ‘DeepSeek AI’. The perpetrators used the platform to promote fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes, misleading unsuspecting followers. KBC promptly issued a statement through its sister station, KBC Radio Taifa, acknowledging the breach and assuring the public of efforts to restore the account. They also cautioned users to be wary of recent posts from the compromised account.

The consecutive breaches of prominent Kenyan institutions underscore a troubling escalation in cyber threats targeting the nation’s digital infrastructure. The audacity of these attacks, especially against entities like the DCI, highlights a significant challenge to Kenya’s cybersecurity measures.

Authorities are urged to expedite investigations into these incidents, apprehend the culprits, and implement robust security protocols to safeguard against future cyber intrusions. The public is advised to remain vigilant, verify information from official channels, and exercise caution when encountering unsolicited communications or promotions on social media platforms.

As the situation develops, updates will be provided to keep citizens informed about the integrity of communications from key institutions and the measures being taken to fortify the nation’s cybersecurity defenses.
