A 40-year-old man accused of threatening a magistrate over a case he allegedly had an interest in will remain in custody after a Milimani court declined to grant him bond.
Francis Kamau Karanja is accused of sending threatening messages to Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Thamara through SMS and WhatsApp, allegedly raising serious security concerns that forced the judicial officer to leave her home and stop using her personal vehicle.
In its ruling, the court found that the prosecution had established compelling reasons to justify his continued detention.
The prosecution told the court that the alleged threats were sent on September 28, 2026, at around 7pm. Karanja allegedly accused the magistrate of bias in a case involving Gabriel Saka before warning her to be careful because he knew where she lived.

The court further heard that the magistrate’s concerns over her safety prompted her to relocate from her residence. She reportedly visits the home only occasionally and has stopped using her personal vehicle as a precaution.
The matter was reported at Kibera Police Station, leading to Karanja’s arrest. He has since denied the charge, pleading not guilty.
The case is scheduled for pre-trial mention on October 14, 2026.
The allegations have yet to be proved in court.
