Kenya is mourning the sudden demise of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who has passed away at the age of 64.

Chebukati, who oversaw Kenya’s highly contested 2017 and 2022 General Elections, was a key figure in the country’s electoral process, often making headlines for his firm stance on democracy and electoral integrity.

The former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati had been critically ill & is admitted to the ICU at a Nairobi hosipital late last week hospital after the situation got dire.

His tenure at the IEBC was characterized by both praise and criticism, notably for his role in the nullified 2017 presidential election and the hotly debated 2022 polls.

Leaders from across the political divide have started sending in their condolences, hailing him as a defender of democracy and a man of principle.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
