In a surprising turn of events, former Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed have dismissed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s recent declaration that he is the legitimate leader of the opposition in Kenya.

The two leaders made their sentiments known during a lively homecoming party for Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.During the event, Duale and Junet were quick to remind Kalonzo that, according to the law, the position of the leader of the opposition is traditionally held by the leader of the minority in Parliament.

Junet, who currently holds the title of Minority Leader in the National Assembly, expressed his disbelief at Kalonzo’s move, describing it as a misstep.Junet Mohammed did not stop there. He hinted at a potential political shift that could see the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party throw its weight behind President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

This speculation comes in the wake of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s focus on his role as the African Union (AU) envoy, which Junet argues leaves a leadership vacuum in the opposition.According to Junet, with Raila Odinga stepping back to concentrate on his duties at the AU, no other politician within ODM or the opposition at large seems ready to take on President Ruto in 2027.

He suggested that ODM might need to realign itself and support the president, marking a significant departure from its traditional opposition role.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, these developments have left many wondering about the future of the opposition in Kenya and the role Kalonzo Musyoka will play moving forward. Will he be able to rally the opposition under his leadership, or will ODM’s potential shift of allegiance signal the end of his bid to lead the opposition?
