A football match in Migori nearly descended into chaos after a man allegedly carrying a loaded pistol attempted to gain access to the VIP section during a National Super League fixture at Sony Green Stadium in Awendo.

The suspect, identified as Godfrey Otieno, alias “Daddy”, was arrested by security officers during the match between Migori Youth FC and Equity Bank FC after he reportedly tried to force his way into the VIP dais.

According to police, security personnel on duty became suspicious of the man’s movements and moved in to restrain him. During the confrontation, he allegedly drew a CZ pistol, prompting officers to swiftly overpower and disarm him before the situation escalated.

Police recovered a CZ pistol loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition from the suspect. Investigators further established that Otieno had allegedly been masquerading as a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm belongs to Peter Jobando, a licensed civilian firearm holder. Authorities said Jobando later appeared at the scene and admitted that he had handed the weapon to Otieno.

His admission led to his immediate arrest for allegedly allowing an unauthorised person to possess a firearm, an offence under Kenya’s firearms laws.

The two suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue ahead of their planned arraignment in court.

Police have since secured the pistol and ammunition as exhibits in the case.

The incident briefly caused concern among spectators and officials at the stadium, but security officers managed to restore calm, allowing the match to proceed without further disruption.
