A Kenyan family living in Waterloo, Iowa, USA, is mourning an unimaginable loss after four family members—three children and their mother—died following a tragic road accident while vacationing in Kenya.

The fatal crash occurred on January 4, 2026, along a major highway near Nairobi, shattering what had been planned as a joyful family holiday. Three siblings—Emmanuel DeLeon (13), Kairu Winkelpleck, and Njeri DeLeon (16)—were among the victims.

Emmanuel, an eighth-grade student at Hoover Middle School, and Kairu, a first-grader at Royal Legacy Christian Academy, died on the spot due to the severity of the crash. Their elder sister, Njeri, a junior at West High School, sustained critical injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma. After days in intensive care, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday, deepening the family’s grief.

Tragically, the family’s pain did not end there. Their mother, who had also been critically injured in the crash, remained hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit for days. She passed away on January 17, 2026, turning the tragedy into a quadruple loss that has left relatives, friends, and entire communities in shock.
Just three months before her death, Njeri had been featured in her school’s online publication, The Wahawk Insider, where she was recognised for her commitment and leadership in cheerleading—an accolade that now stands as a heartbreaking reminder of a young life full of promise.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through both Kenya and the Kenyan diaspora in the United States, with messages of condolence pouring in from classmates, teachers, faith groups, and community leaders. What began as a family visit meant to reconnect with home ended in a devastating reminder of life’s fragility.

As investigations into the crash continue, the tragedy has renewed conversations around road safety in Kenya, even as a grieving family struggles to come to terms with a loss that spans generations and continents.
