Sifuna Draws Massive Crowd in Trans Nzoia as Questions Grow Over His Rising Influence in Western Kenya

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political star continued to rise over the weekend after he received a rousing welcome in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, where thousands of supporters lined the streets and packed the town to attend a rally organised by ODM’s Linda Mwananchi faction.

The event, led by Sifuna alongside leaders allied to Siaya Governor James Orengo, attracted huge crowds, with supporters climbing onto rooftops and balconies to catch a glimpse of the opposition leaders as they made a grand entry into Kitale.

The turnout has reignited debate over whether the outspoken Nairobi senator is steadily emerging as one of the most influential political figures in the Western region and a possible new Luhya kingpin ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Kitale rally forms part of the Linda Mwananchi faction’s nationwide mobilisation campaign, which seeks to position itself as the voice of opposition politics while championing constitutionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Addressing the gathering, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi said Sifuna’s growing national profile presents a historic opportunity for the Luhya community, urging fellow opposition leaders to give him a central role in ongoing coalition talks.

Osotsi argued that the time had come for the opposition to seriously consider backing a Luhya presidential candidate, saying the community has produced capable leaders who are ready to lead the country.

His remarks are expected to fuel fresh political discussions within the opposition, where negotiations on a united front against President William Ruto are gathering momentum.

Sifuna, who has in recent months emerged as one of the opposition’s most vocal figures, has consistently criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration while calling for reforms, good governance and stronger protection of constitutional institutions.

Political observers say the massive reception in Kitale signals that Sifuna’s influence is expanding beyond Nairobi and could reshape political alignments in Western Kenya, a region traditionally associated with leaders such as Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetang’ula and Eugene Wamalwa.

Whether the enthusiastic reception translates into long-term political support remains to be seen, but Saturday’s rally underscored Sifuna’s growing appeal and the increasing prominence of the Linda Mwananchi movement within the country’s evolving opposition politics.
