The Kenyan sports fraternity is in mourning following the untimely demise of volleyball legend Janet Wanja, who succumbed to gallbladder cancer. Wanja, a celebrated former national team setter, leaves behind a legacy that has deeply inspired young athletes across the nation.

Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in from her former teammates, fans, and leaders, highlighting her immense contributions to the sport. Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) President Waithaka Kioni described Wanja as “an exceptional athlete who raised Kenya’s flag high on international platforms.”

“We have lost a true icon of volleyball. Wanja’s resilience and passion for the sport were unmatched. She was a mentor, a friend, and a role model to many,” Kioni stated.

Wanja’s teammates from the Malkia Strikers also expressed their grief, recalling her infectious energy and leadership both on and off the court. “Janet was not just a teammate but a sister. She taught us to fight for our dreams relentlessly. Her loss is deeply personal,” shared veteran player Mercy Moim.

Political leaders and public figures also joined in the tributes. Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba mourned Wanja’s passing as a loss to the entire nation. “Janet Wanja was a trailblazer whose commitment to volleyball inspired a generation. She fought valiantly both on the court and in her battle against cancer. May her legacy continue to shine,” Namwamba remarked.

On social media, fans have been sharing memories of Wanja’s unforgettable performances, particularly during her time at the African Championships, where she was instrumental in Kenya’s victories. The hashtag #RIPJanetWanja has been trending, with thousands paying homage to her unparalleled career and larger-than-life personality.

Wanja’s career spanned over two decades, during which she donned the national colors with pride, representing Kenya in multiple international competitions, including the World Cup and the World Championships. Her precision, agility, and playmaking abilities earned her recognition as one of Africa’s greatest setters.

Details of her funeral arrangements are expected to be released by her family in the coming days. As tributes continue to flow, the nation remembers not just a volleyball star but a beloved icon whose light will continue to shine in the hearts of many.

Rest in peace, Janet Wanja. Your legacy will forever be etched in Kenya’s sports history.
