Kenya has made a thunderous statement at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after 18-year-old Edmund Serem stormed to gold in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase, leading a historic Kenyan clean sweep of the podium.
Serem produced a composed and commanding performance to cross the finish line first, ahead of compatriots Simon Kiprop Koech, who claimed silver, and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett, who settled for bronze as Kenya once again underlined its dominance in one of its signature events.

Serem led a dominant Kenyan clean sweep of the podium, with Simon Kiprop Koech taking silver and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett claiming bronze in another emphatic display of Kenya’s enduring strength in the steeplechase.

The remarkable 1-2-3 finish handed Team Kenya its first athletics gold of the Glasgow Games and reinforced the country’s long-standing supremacy in the steeplechase, an event in which Kenyan athletes have traditionally excelled at the Commonwealth Games.
The victory also marks another major milestone for Serem, who at just 18 years old continues his meteoric rise after emerging as one of the world’s brightest steeplechase talents.
With the latest results, Team Kenya’s medal tally now stands at five medals — one gold, one silver and three bronze. Athletics has immediately boosted Kenya’s medal hunt after Joshua Amunga opened the country’s account with a bronze in weightlifting before the track team began competition.
Kenya will now look to build on the strong start as more athletics finals, including the 800m, 5,000m and relay events, get underway in Glasgow, with several Kenyan stars tipped to challenge for more medals in the coming days.
