At least 21 people are feared dead following a tragic road accident involving a school bus belonging to AIC Naki High School that was ferrying mourners. The bus crashed at the Mamboleo Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu County on Thursday night.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the fatalities, saying emergency response teams were on site and that rescue and recovery operations were ongoing. The bus is said to have been transporting mourners from a funeral when the accident occurred under unclear circumstances.
“It’s a tragic incident. We are still piecing together what happened, but so far, 21 people are feared to have lost their lives,” said Commander Maina.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus appeared to have lost control while negotiating the Mamboleo Coptic Roundabout, a known accident blackspot in the region. Several injured victims were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for urgent medical attention.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether speeding, mechanical failure, or poor visibility may have played a role.
The accident has cast a pall of sorrow across the region, with residents and leaders calling for improved road safety measures and stricter regulation of public transport vehicles, especially those used during funerals.
