The Majority Standoff: Kalonzo Declares Azimio the Legitimate House Majority, Calls for Action

Wiper Party Leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has thrown down the gauntlet to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition (KK), demanding that it relinquish the majority position in Parliament following a High Court ruling that Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition is the rightful majority alliance.

Speaking in Malindi Constituency shortly after launching a Wiper Party office, Kalonzo did not mince words. He directed Azimio-allied MPs to assert their dominance when Parliament resumes on Tuesday next week, declaring that the time for legal battles was over—it was now time for action.

“The courts have spoken. Azimio is the majority, and we must take our rightful place in the House. When Parliament resumes, let no one hesitate—we must reclaim what belongs to us,” Kalonzo stated, drawing loud cheers from his supporters.

The ruling, delivered last Friday, effectively undermines Kenya Kwanza’s grip on parliamentary leadership, setting the stage for what could be a dramatic political showdown. If Azimio legislators heed Kalonzo’s call, a battle for control of crucial parliamentary committees and legislative agenda looms.

Peter Kaluma: ‘Azimio Was Buried Long Ago’

However, not all Azimio-affiliated leaders share Kalonzo’s enthusiasm. Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma dismissed the ruling as a delayed and meaningless decision, arguing that Azimio as a coalition had already collapsed.

“UDM left Azimio before Parliament even sat. Narc Kenya left Azimio. DAP and Wiper left Azimio for a coalition with Gachagua. Jubilee died barely five months after the 2022 elections. Azimio died and was buried long ago. The court declaration that Azimio is the majority party in Parliament unduly delayed and denied us justice,” Kaluma stated.

His remarks reflect the deep divisions within the opposition camp, raising questions about Azimio’s ability to capitalize on the ruling. Will Azimio MPs take the fight to Kenya Kwanza, or will internal rifts derail their momentum?

    Kalonzo: Ruto’s Popularity is Plummeting

Beyond the parliamentary fight, Kalonzo seized the moment to drum up support for his 2027 presidential bid, branding President William Ruto as an increasingly unpopular leader.

“Kenyans are suffering under this administration. The high cost of living, corruption, and broken promises have made life unbearable. We must correct this in 2027 by bringing real leadership to the people,” Kalonzo declared.

His remarks come amid growing discontent over the rising cost of fuel, new taxes, and accusations of state capture by cartels. Whether his aggressive push for parliamentary control will translate into a stronger 2027 bid remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—the battle for the majority seat has just begun.

As Parliament reconvenes next week, all eyes will be on Speaker Moses Wetang’ula—will he implement the court ruling, or will Kenya Kwanza put up a fight? One thing is certain: a political storm is brewing in the House.
