Controversial Kamba gospel artist Ken Kijana alias Ndeke Ya Muthanga has once again sparked heated debate after quoting a Bible verse many interpreted as endorsing alcohol consumption during the Rick B TV Club Tour concert held at Jiweke Tavern in Umoja.
The singer, known for his unconventional style of ministry and entertainment, reportedly paused during the lively Club Tavern event and preached from 5:23, telling revelers:
“Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”

According to a video recorded during the show by host Ricky B and that has gone viral during the show, Ndeke went further and told revelers that no one should make them feel guilty for drinking, arguing that alcohol is acknowledged within biblical teachings when used responsibly.
His remarks immediately triggered mixed reactions online, with clips from the event spreading rapidly across social media platforms and WhatsApp groups as Christians and entertainment fans clashed over the interpretation of scripture.
While some supporters defended the singer, saying he merely quoted the Bible as written, critics accused him of selectively using scripture to justify drinking and entertain crowds inside a nightlife environment.

Others questioned whether the controversial artist was genuinely ministering or simply capitalizing on viral moments to remain relevant within Kenya’s fast-growing online entertainment culture.
The debate intensified further after Ndeke Ya Muthanga’s godmother, Stella Mengele, publicly defended him on social media, praising his confidence while encouraging him to take ministry more seriously.
Mengele stated that she was now “more proud of him than ever,” adding that if the singer fully commits himself to gospel ministry, he has the potential to become a powerful preacher.
Her remarks drew additional reactions online, with some praising her for supporting the artist’s spiritual direction while others accused senior gospel figures of encouraging controversial teachings for publicity and online attention.
Ndeke Ya Muthanga has remained one of the most polarizing personalities in the Kamba gospel scene due to his viral online appearances, celebrity-linked interviews and unconventional blend of comedy, entertainment and ministry.

Yesterday’s event at Club Tavern was part of Season Four of the popular Club Tour organized by Kamba influencer and events host Ricky B, a nightlife entertainment series that has been traversing Ukambani and Nairobi since early this year while attracting major attention among Kamba music and entertainment fans.
