The Senate is set to commence impeachment proceedings against Kericho County Governor, Dr. Erick Kipkoech Mutai, on Monday, 14th October 2024. The Senators will debate serious charges leveled against Governor Mutai, which include gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of the Constitution.
The two-day hearing will begin with a closed-door pre-hearing session from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by the formal reading of charges and opening remarks from both parties. The Kericho County Assembly will present its case, accusing Governor Mutai of gross violations of the Constitution, such as misappropriation of county revenue and failing to implement automated revenue collection systems, which allegedly caused significant financial losses.
Moreover, the County Assembly claims that the Governor has engaged in illegal appointments and dismissals, in violation of the Public Finance Management Act, and misused funds earmarked for victims of the Londiani accident tragedy.
Further allegations accuse Governor Mutai of leading a lavish lifestyle and overseeing an administration marred by procurement irregularities and tender manipulation. There are also claims of abuse of office through illegal appointments and improper directives that allegedly undermined the County Assembly’s oversight role.
On Tuesday, 15th October, Governor Mutai’s legal team will present their defense, including witness testimonies and cross-examinations. The proceedings will culminate with closing arguments from both sides and a debate among the Senators, who will then vote on the impeachment motion.
The Senate will ultimately decide whether to uphold or reject the motion passed by the Kericho County Assembly seeking to remove Governor Mutai from office.
