The ODM party nominations in Kasipul Constituency on 24 September 2025 spiraled into chaos, with violence, intimidation, and irregularities marring the exercise. The disturbing scenes prompted National Liberal Party (NLP) aspirant Omondi K’oyoo to issue a strong condemnation, describing the events as a betrayal of democracy and the will of the people.
The nominations, which were expected to run smoothly, faced delays in multiple polling stations due to late arrival of materials. Tempers flared as rival camps clashed, and shocking reports emerged of school children in uniform allegedly being lined up to cast ballots. Videos of the incidents quickly went viral, casting doubt on the credibility of the process.
The situation escalated when Beryl’s Hospital in Oyugis Town, owned by aspirant Newton Ogada, was invaded by suspected political goons linked to a rival camp. Property was destroyed, vehicles were vandalised, and patients were trapped inside as chaos engulfed the facility. The attack on a health institution drew particular outrage, with many questioning the extremes to which political competition has descended.
ODM’s National Elections Coordinating Committee chair, Emily Awitta, condemned the disruptions as “barbaric” and warned of possible disqualification for aspirants found culpable. Despite the turmoil, the party later declared Boyd Were the winner of the Kasipul parliamentary ticket, sparking further tension and threats of legal action from his opponents.
In his statement, Omondi K’oyoo described the violence as a grave affront to democratic ideals.
“The use of threats, chaos, and voter manipulation cannot be tolerated in a nation striving for fairness and justice. The vandalisation of a hospital and the trapping of patients inside shows just how far this lawlessness has gone,” K’oyoo said.
K’oyoo reaffirmed the NLP’s commitment to peace, transparency, and people-centered leadership, urging all political actors to respect democratic processes and protect citizens’ constitutional rights.
“The NLP stands for peace, transparency, and people-centered leadership. I urge all political players to ensure that our people are never again subjected to such acts of violence,” he added.
As Kasipul comes to terms with the chaotic nominations, K’oyoo’s message has struck a chord with many voters disillusioned by the brutality and manipulation witnessed. For the NLP aspirant, the events serve both as a warning of the dangers of unchecked political competition and as an opportunity to present his vision of leadership that is accountable to the people, not to a few individuals.
