Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Friday, February 16, 2025
National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Augustus Kyalo Muli has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, joining a high-profile delegation of Kenyan leaders rallying behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. The election, set to take place today, has drawn intense regional lobbying, with Kenya seeking to secure the top continental post.

Speaking to Channel 15 News via phone from Addis Ababa, Muli underscored the importance of Raila’s bid, emphasizing its significance not only for Kenya but for the entire East African region.
“This is a historic moment for Kenya and East Africa. Raila Odinga has the experience and vision needed to lead the African Union into a new era of transformation. I am here in Addis Ababa in full solidarity with his candidacy, alongside other national leaders,” Muli said.

Muli joins 40 Members of Parliament who have also traveled to Ethiopia to support Raila. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed their presence, noting that the lawmakers are attending in their private capacity and not under State sponsorship.

President William Ruto is also in Addis Ababa, having arrived yesterday ahead of the 38th AU Summit, where the election will take center stage.

Despite Kenya’s concerted efforts, Raila’s bid faces a significant challenge following the Southern African Development Community (SADC)’s formal endorsement of Madagascar’s candidate. The 16-member regional bloc has instructed its states to vote as a bloc, threatening to tilt the race against Kenya’s candidate.

As the clock ticks towards the crucial vote, Kenya’s leaders in Addis Ababa remain hopeful that Raila can still pull off a win through last-minute diplomatic efforts. Muli, a strong advocate for regional cooperation, expressed confidence that Raila’s track record would win over undecided AU member states.

“Africa needs a unifier and a visionary leader. Raila Odinga has demonstrated time and again that he is the right person for this role. We believe in his leadership and are here to ensure Kenya secures this important position,” Muli affirmed.
With Raila’s fate hanging in the balance, all eyes are now on the AU elections as Kenya’s delegation continues to lobby for crucial votes.
